Hearing Evaluation

Otoscopic Ear Canal Examinations

This is a visual examination of your eardrum and ear canal with a lighted instrument called an otoscope.  Some otoscopes can be connected to a miniaturized camera that transfers an image of your ear canal onto a monitor.

  • This examination is the first step in determining the reason for an individuals hearing difficulties.
  • Since wax build-up in the ear canal (cerumen impaction) can give the false perception of a hearing loss, the ear canal must be clear of wax before proceeding with any type of hearing test.

Have your ears regularly checked for wax build-up and cleaned by your physician.

Hearing Screenings

This is a quick and simple hearing test that requires specifically calibrated test equipment and is used outside of the sound booth.

  • Most of us are tested as a child and throughout elementary school.  After that a hearing test is not considered until a hearing loss is evident.
  • Establishing a baseline audiogram BEFORE hearing loss occurs is vital in diagnosing future hearing loss.
  • Once you have established a baseline audiogram, an annual screening is recommended for people of all ages.
  • Should an annual screening reflect a change, our specialist will recommend a comprehensive hearing evaluation to determine the reason for the change in hearing.

Make hearing screenings part of your annual physical exams.

Comprehensive Hearing Testing

This is a more extensive hearing test consisting of various test procedures.

Patient Interview:  A brief face-to-face medical history interview with our specialist.

Familiar Voice Recognition:  A test measuring un-aided speech recognition, requiring a third party familiar voice.

Speech Discrimination:  A test measuring aided speech recognition.

Pure Tone Audiometry:  This test is performed in our large, comfortable sound booth and measures your response to a series of tones.

Hearing Consultations

At the completion of your Comprehensive Hearing Evaluation our specialist will thoroughly explain the results, help you understand your current hearing condition and help you choose the most appropriate hearing solution for your individual communication needs.

Most hearing losses can be helped with hearing aids.  With so many manufacturers and so many different types of hearing aids the differences among them can be confusing.

Let our professional hearing specialist help you make an informed decision!

Based on the decision made at your hearing consultation, some hearing aids can be fit immediately...go home with new hearing aids the same day as your hearing test.

If custom hearing aids are selected, the right fit starts with precise, impressions of your ear canals.  These impressions are shipped to the manufacturer and custom hearing aids arrive in approximately 2 weeks.
