Prevention and Protection
Noise Exposure is one of the most common causes of hearing loss, also known as Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL). It is estimated that over 10 million Americans suffer from NIHL and many more are exposed to noise that can harm their hearing over time. Since NIHL is preventable it is important to take steps to protect your hearing.
The following points will help you to make decisions about protecting your hearing:
- Any noise above 85 decibel can cause damage to your hearing. Jet engines, lawn mowers, motorcycles, chainsaws, powerboats, and personal stereos are all within this decibel range. Here’s a good rule of thumb: If you have to raise your voice to shout over the noise to be heard by someone within an arm's length away, the noise is probably in this range. (See Attached Chart)
- Wear hearing protection when involved in loud activities at work or at play. Custom hearing protection devices provide the best protection from noise and provide the most comfort.
- If possible, try to reduce noise at the source. Sometimes, replacing mufflers, keeping equipment in good maintenance, or placing the machine inside an enclosure can shield a person from the risks of NIHL.
- When purchasing new tools and yard equipment, consider their noise outputs before buying units with ineffective mufflers.
- Personal listening devices (like CD players with earphones) can also present risks to hearing; avoid turning the volume up high.
- Musicians are exposed to various sound frequencies that can be harmful to their hearing. Special Musician Earplugs have been designed to match the ears natural response making sound quieter but not distorted, allowing music to be heard.
We make custom hearing protection specially designed to protect your hearing from noise hazards found in various environments.
The staff at Advanced Hearing Aid Center will be happy to help you select the custom hearing protection device that’s right for you.
